Demise Of Newspapers

On Monday the News & Observer (Raleigh newspaper) announced that they would cut their staff by 11% and everyone would take a pay cut depending on their current salary. Obviously newspapers and TV stations have not been left out of this current economic crisis. Nobody is buying products, which means companies don't feel they have they money for advertising, which trickles down to the rank and file at media outlets to endure the following:

#1) Salary Freezes
#2) Hiring Freezes
#3) Elimination of matches on 401k's
#4) Furloughs
#5) Elimination of overtime
#6) Layoffs.

We have had all of these at my station. Newspapers have endured much worse than us. Many papers have shut down entirely....Rocky Mountain News in Denver....and a paper in Rocky Mount, NC are just two that come to mind.
Monday's assignment was to do a story on the recent announcement from the News & Observer. This is an extremely video poor story, not a love of any photographer. I think we did a good job with it. I post it simply because it has been a LONG time since we produced anything I was proud off....since the Kay Yow story.
Nathan will be back later this week.
